Edition choice (why this scan)

Three archive.org full-text scans of the Wolfe translation were compared:
understandinghum00adlerich, dli.ernet.247260, in.ernet.dli.2015.126777.
All three carry the same Wolfe translation ("Translated by Walter Beran Wolfe /
Greenberg, Publisher, Inc."). The chosen scan (…126777) has the cleanest OCR
(single word-spacing; 6 stray non-ASCII glyphs vs 1728 in one alternative and
9446 double-spaces in another). Single word-spacing matters: the verbatim gate
normalizes whitespace, and double-spaced OCR mangles substring matching. One
scan's title block misprints "First published in Great Britain in 1923"; this
is a printing/library artifact — the German original Menschenkenntnis and the
Wolfe English translation are both 1927.

PD status of the translation

  • Adler (author) d. 1937 → PD (life+70).
  • Walter Béran Wolfe (translator) d. 1935 → the translation's own copyright
    term is also expired in life+70 jurisdictions. The 1927 US first edition
    additionally predates the 1928 US public-domain cutoff. Clean PD on both the
    author and translator sides.

OCR caveat (affects verbatim selection)

The scan is a djvu OCR of a 1927 print. Two artifact classes matter for
verbatim quoting:

  1. Line-break hyphenation — words split across lines (over- come,
    first- born). After whitespace-normalization these read as over- come;
    quotes are selected to avoid crossing a hyphenated line-break so the blockquote
    stays a literal substring.
  2. Stray OCR garbles — occasional wrong glyphs inside words (veiy for
    very, {in for an, *heir for their, 6f for of, sohl for
    soul). Quote spans are chosen to avoid garbled tokens; where a needed
    passage contains one, the span is trimmed to the clean part.

Every > evidence blockquote in concepts/, principles/, chains/ is a
whitespace-normalized literal substring of this file, enforced by
scripts/verify_quotes.py.

German original as term arbiter

The German first edition Menschenkenntnis (1927) is used only as the arbiter
for canonical terms (see TERMINOLOGY.md): Minderwertigkeitsgefühl,
Geltungsstreben, Gemeinschaftsgefühl, Lebensstil, männlicher Protest. No German
text is ingested as an evidence pool; German terms carry no blockquotes.

RU layer

No clean public-domain Russian translation of Menschenkenntnis exists in this
corpus. Every Russian rendering in this vault is our own careful translation
from the PD English (and, for single terms, the German), marked «перевод
наш». English is the sole primary evidence pool; the RU glosses are reading
aids, never evidence.
